Official Character Stills and Teaser Trailer for the Scholar Who Walks the Night

Wednesday, July 01, 2015

The upcoming MBC fantasy sageuk Scholar Who Walks the Night has finally released the official character stills and they sure are pretty.

The drama is based on the webtoon of the same name by Jo Joo Hee (writer) and Han Seung Hee (illustrator). The story follows scholar Kim Sung Yeol (Lee Jun Ki) of the royal library who is dragged into a conspiracy and ends up being turned into a vampire. In the drama's present day, he meets and falls in love with Jo Yang Sun (Lee Yoo Bi), a nobleman's daughter who crossdresses as a man and begins to sell books after her family meets ruin. Their fates are threatened by the evil vampire Gwi (Lee Soo Hyuk) who is mysterious but also extremely dangerous and who conspires against Crown Prince Lee Yun (Shim Chang Min). Futher adding to the mystery is the character of Choi Hye Ryung (Kim So Eun), a cold and secretive woman who is the exact replica of the hero's first love Lee Myung Hee who died a long time ago.

The first teaser trailer that was released last week gives us a glimpse of possibly (hopefully) a very thrilling ride with tragedy, romance, fantasy and action mixed into one appealing package. Of course, it's just the first teaser and it's difficult to make predictions based on that alone, but the overall feel that I get is rather similar to Lee Jun Ki's other fantasy sageuk Arang and the Magistrate

The official character stills also remind me of Arang actually. The costumes are just as beautiful as they were in the character cuts of Arang and I am thoroughly satisfied with how the cast looks. Lee Soo Hyk and Lee Jun Ki both are perfectly cast in their respective vampire roles, while the girls Lee Yoo Bi and Kim So Eun look absolutely gorgeous in their sageuk clothing. I have less nice things to say about Chang Min's facial hair, but he's the weakest link of the cast anyway as his last full length K-drama was the atrocious Paradise Ranch

Truthfully, I wasn't super excited for this drama at first and the only reason I really wanted to check it out was because I've been wishing for a vampire villain role for Lee Soo Hyuk for a long time. That is not to say that I have anything against Lee Jun Ki (although he tends to overact in emotional scenes) or the rest of the cast, but I just wasn't feeling the drama. However, a few stills and a trailer can make a huge difference and I find myself getting really excited for this. If it's at least as good as Arang then I will be happy.

Scholar Who Walks the Night series will premiere on July 8th, taking over MBC's Wednesdays & Thursdays time slot that is currently occupied by Warm and Cozy.
