Melody of Lyrics: SHINee - Symptoms

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

It's a shame that I haven't ever done a post on SHINee, when I actually think of them as one of the most talented K-pop groups out there. But thankfully now I've got an excuse to feature them in my blog as their recent release "Symptoms" immediately captured my interest and I wanted to use it for my Melody of Lyrics series. The song is a slow jam piece with vocally powerful chorus and amazing emotions. And the lyrics were written by Jonghyun

English translation:

It’s a mysterious, no, it’s a strange thing, it might be a sickness
I have no strength in my body, I can’t control it
These bad symptoms appeared after I met you
I’m left alone on this black night (in my room that’s filled with thoughts of you)
I can’t do anything and I draw you out as I am in pain all day
Your indifferent face that I can’t figure out makes my breath stop

Your cold eyes digs into my heart, cutting deeply through the center
If I don’t cure this wound, I might die, I might go crazy, I don’t know what will happen
The sickness that is you, the worse it gets, the more exhausted I get but the only medicine is you
If I can’t have you, I might die, I might go crazy, I don’t know what will happen
The only medicine is you
I can’t live if I lose you

When I hear your name, it feels like there are thorns on it
My heart feels electrified and numb as if I swallowed rose thorns
My deeply pierced heart, my pierced heart, my bruised heart
(Hold out your hand and embrace it)
You pretend to give me a chance as you come close then get far away
Like a doll, I get dragged around but in front of you, my breath stops

Your cold eyes digs into my heart, cutting deeply through the center
If I don’t cure this wound, I might die, I might go crazy, I don’t know what will happen
The sickness that is you, the worse it gets, the more exhausted I get but the only medicine is you
If I can’t have you, I might die, I might go crazy, I don’t know what will happen
The only medicine is you
I can’t live if I lose you

I can’t figure out this fever, I can’t cool it down
Can you hear my heart that’s about to burst toward you?
I’ve dried up like the desert, I’m hoping for a sweet rain that is you, to fall

Your cold eyes digs into my heart, cutting deeply through the center
If I don’t cure this wound, I might die, I might go crazy, I don’t know what will happen
The sickness that is you, the worse it gets, the more exhausted I get but the only medicine is you
If I can’t have you, I might die, I might go crazy, I don’t know what will happen
The only medicine is you
I can’t live if I lose you

I can’t live if I lose you

Brief discussion of the lyrics:

Even though the lyrics for "Symptoms" are a tad bit too dramatic, I like them quite a lot.

There's some pretty nice imagery created through words like "I’ve dried up like the desert, I’m hoping for a sweet rain that is you, to fall" and really, if you're going for the dramatic effect then do go all the way. With this song the lyrics work really well thanks to the fact that SHINee sings this song so amazingly that each word seems to cut through you. The emotions are spot on, which makes you almost think that the boys really have gone through such a damaging heartbreak.

Tthe reason why I chose the song for today is not just because of the meaning, but also because I thought it just sounds really pretty when you hear it in Korean. The flow of the words is smooth and rhythmic, without any awkward English crammed in between. While I usually prefer love ballads that aren't so tragic and loud, I do think that "Symptoms" is a good example of a dramatic love ballad done right.
