Melody of Lyrics: BoA - Atlantis Princess (Monstar OST)

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Monstar is one of the dramas I am currently watching and one of the best things about the show is its choice of music. From the drama's soundtrack it is BoA's "Atlantis Princess", which I hadn't heard until Monstar even though the song was released back in 2003, that I've listened the most. There are several versions of the song, first is BoA's, which is the most upbeat and poppish, then there is Lena Park's version, which is the longest, and then there is the Monstar version by Ha Yeon Soo, Kim Cho Eun and Kang Ha Neul. I think I personally like Lena Park's version a tiny bit more than the others because I love the little nuances of her voice, but all three versions are great. I also like the lyrics, which are really lovely.

English translation:

What is at the far end of the sea?
Something else, a story that’s far from this world
Will I see it if I climb on top of the clouds?
Angels and children blowing trumpets?

If I place my ear somewhere in the forest
Only I can hear a small voice
Should I fly as if I’m dreaming?
Up high, to a world where no one is there

All of those many questions
All of my endless, unraveled stories
If I turn back, at some point, without me knowing
I forgot my own secrets

Why is this? Am I grown up now?
It feels like I lost some kind of memory
I hope I won’t lose my small hopes and dreams now
I want to whisper to the sky

Among the twinkling stars in the black night sky
Will it contain the place that I was born?
I wanted to believe that I came down
From a different place than the people of earth

All of those many questions
All of my endless, unraveled stories
If I turn back, at some point, without me knowing
I forgot my own secrets

Now, really
Why is this? Am I grown up now?
It feels like I lost some kind of memory
I hope I won’t lose my small hopes and dreams now
I want to whisper to the sky

Why is this? Am I grown up now?
It feels like I lost some kind of memory
I hope I won’t lose my small hopes and dreams now
I want to whisper to the sky

Brief discussion of the lyrics

I think the lyrics are really inspirational and beautiful.

My interpretation of the song is that it's about growing up and reaching your dreams - about "unraveling your story", not knowing what lies ahead. The narrator in the song wonders about her existence and the place she came from, asking whether she was born in the sky like other stars. She talks about her journey, going through forests and climbing on top of clouds, wanting to know more about herself and the world.

At this point of my life, I think this song speaks to me a lot because this search for oneself in the song is something I'm going through. The way the narrator in the song travels around, searching answers to questions about her existence is comparable to how we all look for something in our lives - whether by literally travelling around the world in search of ourselves, or by finding our place in the society we were born in. It is a very dreamy, very hopeful song, the kind that fits perfectly with the coming-of-age stories of our young characters in Monstar.
