Melody of Lyrics: Lee Hyo Ri - Miss Korea

Monday, May 27, 2013

Now although Lee Hyo Ri is one of the most popular Korean female artists, I haven't really acquainted myself with her music. But conveniently for me, she just made her long-awaited comeback with her new album Monochrome and the sexy and stylish "Miss Korea", which I immediately loved. Not only is the song really good, but it also has very thought-provoking lyrics. The song was self-composed and the lyrics were written by Lee Hyo Ri herself.

English translation:

Hey pretty lady in that glass mirror
Is something wrong? You look tired

Are you tired of being among the many names?
Is your confidence down because of your unclear future?

I don’t want to hang on and cry over something so little
Like a springtime illusion that’ll disappear after I wake up

Because I’m a Miss Korea
I’m the best girl in the world
Anyone can fall for me at once
Because I’m a Miss Korea

Because I’m a Miss Korea
I’m the coolest girl in the world
Anyone can be shocked when they find out
Because I’m a Miss Korea

Will a designer bag make me shine?
Will I be able to do anything I want if I become pretty?

I don’t want to hang on and cry over something so little
Like a springtime illusion that’ll disappear after I wake up

Because I’m a Miss Korea
I’m the best girl in the world
Anyone can fall for me at once
Because I’m a Miss Korea

Because I’m a Miss Korea
I’m the coolest girl in the world
Anyone can be shocked when they find out
Because I’m a Miss Korea

Because I’m a Miss Korea
I’m the best girl in the world
Anyone can fall for me at once
Because I’m a Miss Korea

Because I’m a Miss Korea
I’m the coolest girl in the world
Anyone can be shocked when they find out
Because I’m a Miss Korea

Are others eyes that important?
Does it feel like it’s your fault when something goes bad?
No, it’s not like that, come here, it’ll be okay
You’re Miss Korea

Brief discussion of the lyrics:

You know there sometimes these songs that at first seem like they are happy and upbeat, but once you read the lyrics there is actually something sad about them. This is kinda how I feel about "Miss Korea".

The lyrics address the issue of the obsession about beauty as they describe a woman - Miss Korea - looking herself at the mirror, feeling tired of having to look pretty all the time and afraid that it'll all fade away someday like an illusion. Yet, she still is reluctant to cry over something like that, assuring herself that she is Miss Korea and after all she is admired by everyone.

The melody of the song also shifts from upbeat and empowering sequences that seem to say - hell with it, I'm beautiful, I'm miss Korea - to slow and uncertain sequences that rather ask - but am I really happy when my future is so uncertain?

In the end, the title of Miss Korea seems to become something that the woman comforts herself with when she starts to lose her confidence, and the lyrics say: "No, it’s not like that, come here, it’ll be okay. You’re Miss Korea". The slow melody of this last sequence of the song, however, suggests that this does not really comfort her and we are left with this the same kind of uncertainty that she herself is battling with.

  1. I sort of figured, just be watching the MV before, that there would be more to this than a 'hooray I'm a Miss Korea' I like the song. I just wish the chorus wasn't quite so repetitive.

    1. The chorus is a little bit repetetive, but I currently like this song more than "Bad Girls". I really like the contemplating slow parts of this song. And I also tend to be slighly biased towards songs that are created by the singers themselves, because then I actually FEEl like they want to tell me something with the song. I think Lee Hyo Ri did a pretty good job with these lyrics.

  2. I love this song and its lyrics too. It's a great pick-me-up for me, even considering its rather overt sad undertones.

    1. Agree, even though the lyrics are kinda sad, it also has this pick-me-up quality. The chorus is pretty motivational with the "F**k everybody else, I'm awesome" attitude.
