Melody of Lyrics: Epik High - Run

Saturday, February 16, 2013

Yes, this is yet another Epik High post for Melody of Lyrics. And I'm not even going to pretend I'm not biased towards their music, because it should be obvious from the number of Epik High posts I've done for this series already.
Anyways, today I decided to talk about "Run", which was released in March 2010 in Epik High's special album Epilogue (without DJ Tukutz). If I'm being honest, the song didn't leave that big of an impression on me when I first heard it. But while the song steadily grew on me later on, I've always loved the motivational message it carries within the lyrics.

English translation:

Run, run, run away….
Run, run, run away….
Run, run, run away….
No matter how much I run (I can’t escape from it).
Run, run, run away.
If I look back while running (You’re still there).

It’s pitch dark.
The world moves on too fast.
I’m the only one who’s limping on both legs.
The path I must walk is endless.
What’s at the end of this path?
Are you going there knowing about it?
Will I learn the answers if I go there with my eyes closed?
The sky that never responds to a such question.
The two arms tied up by a daily life is too heavy to embrace dreams.
I’m scared, I’ve been abandoned locked away.
Just for today, run somewhere like you're crazy.

Run til you can touch the sky with your hands.
Run til your heart is filled with your dreams.

Everybody run, run, run away…
No matter how much I run (I can’t escape from it).
Everybody run, run, run away…
If I look back while running (You’re still there).

You got me runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ around.
Down, down, down.
You got me runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ around.
Down, down, down.
You got me runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ around.
Down, down, down.
Away…

No matter how much I run, I’m still on the same spot.

My life is a rainy night that rains 365 days.
Heart that gets smaller in every 24 hours.
I even hid the small comma and its tail,
then the future that awaits me becomes a period…
But carry the new day on your shoulder and run.
What am I running towards?
Whether the sun’s setting or I if I’m losing…
I don’t know.
But I go.
Keep on runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ high.
I’m the young star that has been abandoned by the galaxy.

You got me runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ around.
Down, down, down.
You got me runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ around.
Down, down, down.
You got me runnin’ runnin’ runnin’ around.
Down, down, down.
Away…

For you, who’s running endlessly.

Why I like these lyrics:

What I like about the lyrics of "Run" is how from one hand it's a song about hardship, weariness and desperation, while on the other it still motivates to keep trying and fighting for your dreams no matter how hard it is. It's not like the song tries to convince you that all you need is to be positive and be inspired to lead a happy life (like some of those cheap self-help books suggest). Not at all. In fact, the lyrics basically say that yes, life does put you through a lot of crap, perhaps even without giving you a single break, but even so you just need to keep going in the hopes that it'll get better one day. Even if you're lost and tired, and even when you don't know what you're running towards - just don't stop half-way.
