Melody of Lyrics: Cheer Chen - The Meaning of Travel

Friday, December 14, 2012

I'm posting this week's Melody of Lyrics rather late since I've been quite busy these days. Anyways, today I chose a song by a Taiwanese singer Cheer Chen, also known as Chen Chi Chen. The song is "The Meaning of Travel"(A Fabulous Adventure, 2005), which I know only thanks to the film Miao Miao that I reviewed some time back. The lyrics are written by Cheer Chen herself.

English translation of the lyrics:

You've seen a lot of beautiful scenery
You've seen many beautiful girls
You get lost in
every road of the map

You've tasted a night in Paris
You've stepped through a snowy Beijing
You've memorized your
favorite philosophies from books

Yet you're unable to say why you love me
and unable to say what kind of expression of mine you admire the most
and unable to say the circumstances under which your heart was moved by me
You are unable to say your reason for leaving

You've flown a lot
you debate seriously over souvenirs
On the map you've gathered
all the times you experienced beauty

You embrace the passion of islands
You bury the memories of Turkey
You even keep with you
the unreal beautiful scenery in movies

Yet you're unable to say why you love me
and unable to say what kind of expression of mine you admire the most
and unable to say the circumstances under which your heart was divided by me
You are unable to say the meaning of traveling

You force yourself to say your reason for loving me
yet are unable to say what kind of expression of mine you admire the most
and unable to say the circumstances under which your heart was divided by me
You are unable to say your reason for leaving

You force yourself to say that every letter you sent to me
were your reasons for leaving
Leaving me
was the meaning of traveling

Why I like these lyrics:

The lyrics of "The Meaning of Travel" are very lingering and melancholic, as is the song itself. They start with a woman describing her loved one who loves to travel. She tells how passionate the man is about travelling, but how his heart isn't as passionate about her. Even though he sends her letters, she feels that he is avoiding the topic of their relationship and the reason why he chose to travel. But she knows that the reason is her.
I find the travelling aspect to be quite a nice way of describing a relationship, where one person loves the other one more deeply or where one person is no longer in love. Because the reason why people travel and why people break up is quite similar - the heart is looking for something else.

    1. I didn't translate them myself, though (I know nothing about the language :D). The link where I got the translation is after the lyrics.
