Drama Year 2012: The Between Wor(L)ds Drama Awards

Friday, December 28, 2012

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the first awards event here in Between Wor(L)ds - The  Between Wor(L)ds Drama Awards 2012. It is an event meant to appreciate those crazy things about Korean dramas that often go unnoticed, like the best crying face or the worst couple of the year. This is where we get to point out the highlights and the...um...lowlights? of the drama year 2012. So without any further ado...

Warning: May contain some spoilers for dramas that aired in 2012!
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE WORST VILLAIN

Winner:
Tae Mu (Rooftop Prince) - He is also the worst stalker ever. Tae Mu is magnificently good at making faces of someone with constipation, while his forehead veins pulsate so vigorously that you think his head is going to burst. But the most notable thing about Tae Mu is that his every attempt at murder, whether accidental or not, is going to fail miserably.

Nominees:
Kenji (Gaksital) - Poor guy tries so hard to be evil, but comes off as silly boy hoping to impress his evil daddy. However, Kenji gets plus points for his very memorable facial expressions.
Ki Chul (Faith) - He's ridiculous, but at least he's fun to watch.
Bong Gu (The King 2 Hearts) - Worst isn't the best adjective to decribe Capt. Crazypants...or rather Capt. Nopants...
__________________________________________________________________________________________

FRUITCAKE OF THE YEAR

Winner:
Bong Gu (The King 2 Hearts) - But this title fits him perfectly. You see, Mr. Cuckoo Bananas here is the master of making creepy first impressions. As he makes his entrance to the show, he stabs a classmate with a pen and then writes an ominous message "I Am King" on a foggy window. Did I forgot to mention his passion for strange and incredibly long magic tricks that he always chooses to do at the worst time possible? Yeaah, he totally deserves this title.

Nominees:
Byung Hee (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band) - He's the cute kind of wacko. The kind that sleeps on pool tables and wears a lot of guyliner.
Shi Won (Answer me 1997) - Sleeping in a cardboard box on the street just to see her idol - done, writing a vow with blood for her fandom - done, getting into college by creating naughty fanfic - done. Yup, she's one crazy fangirl. But in the best way possible.
Yeo Chi (History Of The Salaryman) - Oh, she is totally cray-cray and hysterically funny. Yeo Chi's the kind who'll cook your pet-chicken and force you to eat it, but she's only doing it because you weren't smart enough to keep out of her way. She just makes crazy into a work of art.
Shunji (Gaksital) - Poor guy went a bit insane. Can't blame him, I'm surprised how others kept their sanity in that tragedy. Though it's funny how Shunji's motto went from "let's just sit down and talk about our feelings" to "I will murder you all"?
Kang Hyun Min (King Of Dramas) - One very crazy actor. Though totally harmless.

THE BEST/MOST FANFIC-WORTHY BROMANCE

Winner no 1:
Joseon F4 (Rooftop Prince) - This Joseon F4 of four clueless puppies is the most bromantic thing that ever happened to mess with time and space.

Winner no 2:
Eye Candy (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band) - The most bromantic high school rock band evar, also one of the best non-blood-related family evar in one of the best teenage dramas evar. Any objections? Didn't think so.

Nominees:
Ahjussi F4 (A Gentleman's Dignity) - What, you say that fourty is too old to be a bromantic flower boy? Think again, because you just might meet the four most childish (and horny) flower boys yet.
Eun Shi Kyung + Jae Ha (The King 2 Hearts) - The most loyal, earnest, and awkward bodyguard bromantically involved with his cocky playboy of a king equals a bro-story you don't want to miss.
Yoon Jae + Joon Hee (Answer Me 1997) - Bromance that you almost wished was real romance.
Kang To + Shunji (Gaksital) - Bromance that is more epic than the actual love story. Though, just as violent.
Seung Ji + Won Il (Panda And Hedgehog) -  What started out as a love rivalry turned into a blossoming bromance between two pouty guys making cupcakes. Nevermind the female lead.
Kang Cheol + Gook Soo (Padam Padam) - God sent a guardian angel down to earth to become a destined wingman for an ex-prisoner that needs help with his love life. AND they take showers together. Is there anything more bromantic?
__________________________________________________________________________________________

BEST SISTERHOOD

Winner:
Shi Won + Yoo Jung (Answer Me 1997) - This scene says it all.

 Nominees:
Hang Ah + Jae Shin (The King 2 Hearts) - After your friend willingly cleans up your poop, it's a friendship for life.
Tae Yi + Doo Ri (What's Up?) - A great advise-giver who beats up your ex-boyfriend when he makes you cry. Yup, Tae Yi really knows how to choose her friends.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE BITCH OF THE YEAR

Winner:
Se Na (Rooftop Prince) - She's pretty and all, but that doesn't make up for her stinky personality one bit. She totally deserves a slap. Or ten. With a chair. But at least at the end of the series aliens kidnapped her and switched her brain, so she could become a good person and be forgiven for all her bitchiness. That's not quite how the real world works, but unfortunately, that is how dramas work.

Nominees:
Jae Hee (Nice Guy) - Jae Hee has three big loves: Ma Ru, herself and money. She loves her kid too, but not enough to be a good role model for him. She wants it all, but in the end is left with none. Poor lonely gold-digger. But she teaches us a good lesson. Never date nice guys. Because they will love you like death and if you betray them, they will take revenge on you.
Han Na (To The Beautiful You) - She is the self-obsessed rich girl who chases after your crush, despite the fact that he doesn't like her. We all know her kind. But a good dose of reality can make her a quite decent person.
Eun Gi (Nice Guy) - I mean the pre-amnesia version of Eun Ki. She's bitchy, but like, awesomely bitchy.
Chae Young (What's Up?) - She's rather really ambitious than bitchy, because she doesn't really care about meddling with others if that doesn't give her any profit. Plus, when she uses her bitchy powers for good, she's quite useful.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE DOUCHE OF THE YEAR

Winner no 1:
Do Hyun (Can We Get Married?) - Boy, does he deserve a punch him in the face. He's a selfish cheating coward, who needs to grow up. And a very pathetic excuse for a man. I think I even like Tae Mu more. Or better yet - Tae Mu-yahh!! Here's a guy you can lock in a freezer for when you wanna practise your murdering skills.

Winner no 2:
Soo Nam (Oohlala Couples) - So what if he did get the girl in the end? I still know that he is still a cheating ass. And I didn't even have to watch the drama to know that.

Nominees:
Do Jin (A Gentleman's Dignity) - Well, he's hardly a gentleman. Most of the time he's just a douche to his crush, because he thinks the best tactic to win her heart is to put her down all the time. Kinda understandable for an immature chaebol boy, but inexcusable for a man in his forties.
Dong Min (Queen In Hyun's Man) - I actually liked him when he was boyishly charming, but then he started acting like an immature douche later on. But I'll forgive him, because I know inside he's still a teenage boy.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

BEST CRYING FACE

Winner:
Kang To (Gaksital) - Well, this is a crying face that is very hard to top. You almost think that how could such a cutie boy like Joo Won turn into something so...um...alien-like?

Nominees:
Shi Won (Answer Me 1997) - If you wash her oppa's sweat and smell off his shirt, this is the face you get.
Yeo Chi (History Of The Salaryman) - And this how attractive people really look when they cry. So dramas, don't try to fool me with that one tear rolling on the cheek-move.
Baek Ho (Operation Proposal) - Aw, it's like watching a baby cry after his favourite toy truck broke.
Young Gul (Fashion King) - Either he's crying because he just realized how stupid this drama is or that's the worst sandwich ever.
Soo Nam (Oohlala Spouses) - Why so dramatic? I thought this was a comedy not melo?
Lee Hwon (The Moon Embracing The Sun) - Wow...from a handsome king to THIS in a few seconds. Nah, just kidding, I still think you're ridiculously good-looking.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST PATHETIC FIRST LOVE (HE WHO NEEDS TO MOVE ON THE MOST)

Winners: Everyone
Jung Woo (Missing You) - She won't forgive you, move on.
Yoon Jae (Answer Me 1997) - She is already devoted to Tony, move on.
Lee Hwon (The Moon Embracing The Sun) - She's dead, move on.
Shunji (Gaksital) - She's only in love with guys who wear masks, move on.
Kang To (Gaksital) - She'll call the cops next time you torture her, move on.
Ma Ru (Nice Guy) - She let you rot in jail, move on.
Baek Ho (Operation Proposal) - She already married someone else, move on.
Yang Myung (The Moon Embracing The Sun) - She's not thirteen anymore, move on.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

COOLEST KING

Winner:
Jae Ha (The King 2 Hearts) - Started out as a an arrogant playboy, but grew-up to be a king that the whole country could be proud of. Plus, Seung Gi looked good in that red uniform.

Nominees:
Lee Hwon (The Moon Embracing The Sun) - Aside from the fact that he spent most of the time moping around because of his lost lover, he was quite awesome as a king. A bit of a smartass, but in a good way.
Anthony (King Of Dramas) - So what if he didn't have a country to rule over, no one one can ever question his devotion to dramas. After all, he was willing to sell his organs to get his drama on air. That's something some kings wouldn't do even for their own country.
Lee Gak (Rooftop Prince) - No other king can raise his chin up higher than Lee Gak, that's for sure.
King of Heaven and King of Underworld/Jade Emperor and Hades (Arang And The Magistrate) - What a bickering duo they make, Jade Emperor being vain and mischievous and Hades being grumpy and mischievous. Not entirely sure these two are really qualified to be ruling the world though...
Jae Kang (The King 2 Hearts) - The king that will be missed.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST HORRIBLE (GRAND)MOMMY

Winner:
Eun Oh's Demon Mom (Arang And The Magistrate) - Well, techically she wasn't his horrible Demon Mom anymore, but somebody else's horrible Demon Fairy Sister (or something). In any case, she was scary as hell. Every time she stared at the screen it looked like she's either A) going to eat the cameraman or B) her eyeballs are going to fall out.

Nominees:
Deul Ja (Can We Get Married?) - The worst non-evil mother-in-law anyone could have. Meddling, controlling, angry and with the worst eye make-up you've seen. But at least her eyeballs were completely intact to the head.
Tae Yong's Grandmommy (Rooftop Prince) - Oh, she's not the kind of grandmother who bakes cookies and knits socks, she's the kind who owns a company and wants to control every detail of his grandson's life. All I can say is that I was glad that Se Na (accidentally) pushed her down the stairs.
Lee Hwon's Grandmommy (The Moon Embracing The Sun) - Yet another grandmom who doesn't know boundaries. Just leave your grandson's love life alone!
Kyung Joon's and Yoon Jae's Mommy (Big) - This woman should have no children at all. Period.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST HORRIBLE DADDY

Winner:
Jung Woo's Daddy (Missing You) - There just no excuse for being such a crappy father. And for that ridiculous moustache.

Nominees:
Shunji's and Kenji's Daddy (Gaksital) - Well, if you raise two sons into half-insane villains then it tells something about your parenting skills.
Won Il's Step Daddy (Panda And Hedgehog) - I think even Cinderella's step mom was a bit kinder than this douche.
Shi Kyung's Daddy (The King 2 Hearts) - I wanted to like because you were Shi Kyung's dad, but seriously, why were you so stupid?
Eun Gi's Daddy (Nice Guy) - Maybe if you'd spent less time on scoring yourself a young hot wife and spent more time on repairing your relationship with your daughter, then perhaps you'd still be alive and breathing.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST BADDASS CHARACTER(S)

Winner:
Hang Ah (The King 2 Hearts) - Um, she's in North-Korean special forces. But if that isn't enough, she first punches some sense into the future king and her soon-to-be boyfriend like it's nobody's business, and then, she marries him and saves him from the baddies. That's just how badass she is.

Nominees:
Eye Candy (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band) - These guys aren't you usual flower boys, they are...uh...well, they are in a rock band and have drums and guitars and leather jackets. I mean, that's already pretty badass. Plus, they get into fights and skip school and look grumpy while doing it. Uh-uh, you can't beat that.
Shi Won (Answer Me 1997) - Now, that's a girl I wouldn't mess with. From all the things I have learned from K-pop the most important thing is that you should never pick a fight with a fangirl. They'll  simply pull your hair out if you dare to diss their bias.
Arang (Arang And The Magistrate) - She's cute, but brave. And totally kicks ass when some butts need whoopin'.
Doo Ri (What's Up?) - She's the kind of girl you wanna hang around with, because once Doo Ri's your friend she'll beat up every jerk who makes you cry.
Shi Kyung (The King 2 Hearts) - He's awkward and adorable. But don't you dare mess with his country.
Kang To (Gaksital) - Once he stops being a villain and comes over to the good side, he makes one super badass masked hero.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST AWESOME FAMILY

Winner:
Shi Won's family (Answer Me 1997) - Shi Won does not only have best parents ever, but also best group of friends, which makes up a one big happy family.

Nominees:
Da Ran's family (Big) - This family's holiday dinners are going to get very weird after the finale. You know, all those missing brothers, nasty mother-in-laws and ex-fiances.
Eye Candy family (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band) -  Who needs a real family when you've got your best buddies to support you, when your parents won't.
Park Ha and her four cubs (Rooftop Prince) - When four strange time-travellers land in your rooftop apartment, what do you do? Take them in, feed them omurice and marry one of them, of course.
Ma Ru's family (Nice Guy) - See, Ma Ru, you don't need to do anything else when you have a loving family beside you already.
Kang Cheol's family (Padam Padam) - An ex-con, his mom, his ex-girlfriend, his son he never knew he had and his guardian angel - yup, one very disfuctional yet loving family.
Jung Woo's replacement family (Missing You) - When his real family sucked, he found  himself a new one. Actually, more drama characters should do this.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST AWESOME NON-HUMAN CHARACTER

Winner:
Arang (Arang And The Magistrate) - Shin Min Ah was already the most lovable gumiho, but she managed to top it by also being the most the most lively ghost. Arang can simulataneously be badass and cute, and she loves peaches. What more could one ask from a leading lady.

Nominees:
Brain Fetus (Dr. Jin) - Just kidding. This pickled baby was more like a big WTF?!
King of Heaven and King of Underworld/Jade Emperor and Hades (Arang And The Magistrate) - I would be happy to play a round of badook with these two bickering world ruling brothers. If I knew how to play it, that is.
Gold Jade Chicken (History Of The Salaryman) - Poor Mrs. Chicken met its tragic end quite early on in the series, but I will always remember her with fondness.
Good Guy Ghost (What's Up?) - Was he really a ghost? Or was he just a random guy trolling around, wearing a red-tracksuit just to freak out young gullible college kids? Doesn't matter though, he was a sweet guy nonetheless.
Gook Soo (Padam Padam) - A guardian angel with Kim Bum's face? Yes one for me too, please.
Grim Reaper Mu Young (Arang And The Magistrate) - He may look scary, but I tell ya, he's a big softie inside.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

BEST HUNCHBACK LOOK

Winner:
Ma Ru (Nice Guy) - Awww, he looks pretty even when he's beaten into a pulp. I guess this award is all Ma Ru's.

No nominees:
__________________________________________________________________________________________

BEST (BIG AND LITTLE) BRO

Winners:
Tae Woong (Answer Me 1997) -  An awesome older brother who does everything for his baby brother, and I mean everything. He's not only a brother, but also a father and a mother to our hero. Though most of the series he's rivalling against his brother for the heroine's heart, you cannot blame Tae Woong - he just didn't know.

Choong Sik (Big) - He's an adorable doofus and a total mama's boy. But you cannot not love him when he's always willing to defend his big sister's honour and do anything for the girl he loves.

Nominees:
Jae Kang (The King 2 Hearts) - A king, who always spares some time to listen to his immature brother complain about his love life. And he's a surprisingly good match-maker.
Eun Suk (Nice Guy) - Poor little guy wanted only one thing - to play with Eun Gi noona. Too bad he was born in a family where everybody hates each other.
Mu Young (Arang And The Magistrate) - The little sister didn't deserve such an awesome bro, but still.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE COOLEST TIME-TRAVELLER

Winner:
Boong Do (Queen In Hyun's Man) - Smartest and most charming time-traveller this year. Period.

Nominees:
Joseon F4 (Rooftop Prince) - While they might have not been the brightest time travellers this year (ahem, the smartest one of them drank from the toilet), they definitely were the most adorable ones.
Baek Ho (Operation Proposal) - Wow, sixteen time-travels to get win your crush's heart? I would have given up already.
Dr. Jin (Dr. Jin) - Well, someone needs to be the laughing stock too.

Choi Young and Eun Soo (Faith) - I'm pretty sure the fact that one of them is Lee Min Ho is all anyone ever cares about.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

WORST COUPLE

Winner:
JB and Hae Sung (Dream High 2) - It was clearly an evil alien clone that stole JB's body half-way through the show. That would explain why his dislike for her did a complete 180. It was because he wanted to gain her trust and lure into the alien mothership to perform experiments on her, right? Right?!

Nominees:
Young Gul + Ga Young + Jae Hyuk + Anna (Fashion King) - I don't even get who was supposed to be the couple with whom. But none of them should have become involved with each other anyways, because the men were violent and the women were abused. No excuse for this messy love quadrangle.
Yeo Ok + Soo Nam (Oohlala Spouses) - So lemme get this straight. He's a cheating jerk and she's abused all throughout their marriage, but she still forgives him and ditches the perfect guy who was there for here all the way. Huh?
Tae Mu + Se Na (Rooftop Prince) - A drama math lesson for you: What do you get when you make two terrible characters date each other? A) A terrible couple B) A couple with no chemistry or C) A couple that wastes precious screentime.
Do Hyun + Hye Jin (Can We Get Married?) - Never should have been a couple. Girl, you just run away as fast as you can from this marriage. And writer, should you pull an Oohlala Spouses-move here, you're dead.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE WORST HAIR:

Winner:
Man Ok, Tae Ik and Gang Whee (Full House 2) - Okay, I know that, you show, are supposed to be wacky all around. But does that really excuse this hairy triple-disaster?

Nominees:
The King of Heaven/Jade Emperor (Arang And The Magistrate) - You'd think that the ruler of heaven could afford a better wig. But I guess all the good ones were out.
Eun Jae (Wild Romance) - She's a bodyguard, right? So is that hair supposed to make all the baddies laugh themselves to death?
Eun Gyeol (To The Beautiful You) - Thank god someone fixed his hair halfway. But really, why what was the stylist thinking - "He's a good looking guy, so obviously we'll give him a bowl cut!" Huh?
Joseon F4 (Rooftop Prince) - Okay, this one I get. They looked ridiculous, but it was for the comedy. And never before has a visit to the hair salon been so tragic when our four puppies were forced to cut their Rapunzel hair off. Aww...
__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE BEST KISS

Winner:
Tip-Toe Kiss (Queen In Hyun's Man) - Best because I'm thinking it's 10% acting and 90% real.

Nominees:
Fountain Kiss (Answer Me 1997) - How sweet...until she kicks your ass for it.
Tropical Poster Kiss (Rooftop Prince) - Aww...but this kiss lacks one thing - three giggling Joseon guys in the background.
Rooftop Kiss (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band) - And that's how bad boys kiss.
Kiss of Life (Arang And The Magistrate) - I like the way you think, Eun Oh. If the heroine is going to die, you at least have to give the audience a good kiss.
First Kiss With My Best Friend (I Need Romance 2) - So let's f**k up our friendship for the next ten years or so.
Refrigerator Kiss (The King 2 Hearts) - Aaand then his brother and her father walk in...awkward...
Open-eyed Kiss (Nice Guy) - Way to make kissing creepy, Ma Ru.
"I'm totally wasted"-Kiss (To The Beautiful You) - I kissed a boy, and I liked it.
Sunlight Kiss (The King 2 Hearts) - Aww, awkward bodyguard is such a charmer. If only he didn't apologize afterwards.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

DERPIEST FACE

Winner:
Shunji (Gaksital) - What is this horrific beast? Somebody call an exorcist!

Nominees:
Tae Yeon (Vampire Prosecutor 2) - Sshhh...he's meditating.

Se Na (Rooftop Prince) - "Hey look! Look! I'm driving with my eyes closed."

Eun Gyeol (To The Beautiful You) - If that's the face you make when you see a naked girl I think we have some problems...
Tae Mu (Rooftop Prince) - Tae Mu in his usual condition.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

THE MOST UNNECSSARY SHAVING SESSION

Winner no 1:
Kang To (Gaksital) - Instead of an angsty shower, we get an angsty shaving routine. I'd prefer a shower scene, because there's isn't a single hair on your face.

Winner no 2:
Ma Ru (Nice Guy) - Come on, Ma Ru. It's more likely that I need a shave than you (and I'm a girl!). I swear your skin looks as smooth as a baby's.

  2. "Either he's crying because he just realized how stupid this drama is or that's the worst sandwich ever."
"I'm pretty sure the fact that one of them is Lee Min Ho is all anyone ever cares about."

    ^^ lmao. XDDDDD

I'd almost forgotten about that kiss from SUFFB. I wasn't very fond of the girl (the character or the actress), but I remember being shocked to my toes when I saw that kiss scene. :D

Si Won really did have the best extended family. :) And, oh my, for that derpiest face category! I really need to watch Bridal Mask, and quick!

    1. I know right, SUFFB's kiss scene was unexpectedly hot. I thought that since it's a school drama the kissing scene will be a sweet and youthful first kiss. But Sung Joon really went for it.

Oh no. Both Douches #1 and #2 are featured on my blog. So is the Worst Couple. Fruitcake of the Year had a prominent position in my old blog. AND the evil Mamas are cackling there yet. hah! (But I do love one of the evil mamas, though.)
    *Must choose future dramas wisely*
    :P

What a fun read! Thanks, Indigo.

    1. I'm guessing you're talking about Deul Ja...? Deul Ja doesn't exactly fall on the same level as the rest of the horrible mommies bunch. I mean, she isn't evil and does actually care about her children. And in later episodes of Can We Get Married? she becomes more sensible and likable. But I wanted to add her among the nominees because she's still the kind of mother and mother-in-law that would drive you crazy with her meddling.
But I will not make any excuses for Do Hyun. He's still a cheater and a douche, hah :P

      Thanks for enjoying it :)

    1. Since I don't think it's humanly possible to watch every drama that comes out in a year, I think there are actually quite many dramas that didn't make it in this post. I only added dramas that I could be certain not to go wrong with.
But thank you and I am glad you liked it :)
