Melody of Lyrics: Youme - Byul/Star (200 Pounds Of Beauty OST)

Friday, November 02, 2012

I heard "Byul/Star" in the 2006 romcom 200 Pounds Of Beauty where it was sung by Kim Ah JoongIn ways this wonderful ballad reminds me of something that you would usually hear in Japanese romance movies. Not sure why though. I find Ah Joong's shorter version of "Byul" in the movie to be most emotional, but in the official soundtrack it is actually performed by Youme, but with equally beautiful voice.

(NOTE: This video contains spoilers for the movie 200 Pounds Of Beauty.)

English translation of the lyrics:

The wind is shaking the windows, and over my small room,
The stars fill up the sky, shining brightly too many to count,
The stars reassure tired me
They wipe away the many tears that are deep inside me

Don't be hurt too much..they hug me tight and pamper me
And comfort me,
Telling me to go to sleep

Though I'm exhausted to the point where I can't walk
Though my tears blur my vision
I'll still smile in front of my love that I'm not able to get

Even though our happy times were short, I'll treasure it deep inside my heart
Like those countless number of stars, forever

My dream is coming. though it is unusual that my one star is bright
It is very bright, even blinding..it comes down to my shoulder
Stop being so sad..it holds my hand as it touches me
And gives me a warm hug

Though I'm exhausted to the point where I can't walkthough my tears blur my vision
I'll still smile in front of my love that I'm not able to get

Even though our happy times were short, I'll treasure it deep inside my heart
Like those countless number of stars, forever

Only for today, I won't cry though my eyes fill with tears
I want to laugh like those stars
Oh~ I want to cherish all my happy moments deep inside my heart
Like those countless number of stars, forever

Why I like these lyrics:

"Byul" is all around so beautiful that the lyrics are no exception. Since it is a love song there isn't much for me to talk about - it's clearly about heartbreak. But to sum up, the lyrics are about comforting yourself and trying to move on from unhappy love and smile even when tears fill your eyes.
While I can't say that the overall theme is particularly original, I just love how the lyrics create this really romantic and sad atmosphere with stars and the night sky. It's something that I really appreciate about song lyrics, that they can create a milieu without the help of a music video. At the same time, I also like how clear and understandable the lyrics are, while still having this poetic value with the beautiful wording.
And when sung by artists with that incredible vocals, the emotion hidden within never fails to impress me.
