Melody of Lyrics: Big Bang - Love Song

Friday, November 30, 2012

By now, I think I have made it clear that Big Bang is pretty much my favourite K-pop group. I like that they have their own sound and actually take part in the production of their songs. G-Dragon is known have composed and written many of their songs, with T.O.P also writing his own rap parts. And for a K-pop group, Big Bang does have quite good song lyrics.
Today, I'm going to discuss "Love Song", which was released in 2011 on their special edition of "Tonight" album. It is not my all-time favourite song from them, but I like the lyrics (and the music video).

English translation of the lyrics:

A girl is drifting away farther
The boy sings but
Tears are falling, we are parting
I can’t touch you
I know yeah eh
Catch me from falling, hello

I hate this love song (x8)

I will never sing again because I hate this love song
So I won’t think about you and move on
I will smile while singing because I hate this love song
I am ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I am ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

I’m scared, this world is meaningless
Take me to that place where you are
Where there are the moon and stars
We were beautiful together
You know, you were the one who taught me love, hello

I hate this love song (x8)

I will never sing again because I hate this love song
So I won’t think about you and move on
I will smile while singing because I hate this love song
I am ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I am ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

The warm sunshine, a new world
A field of reeds, dancing lonely
I am still on the top of a green hill
Unspoken conversations with her
No answers (no answers)
Expressionless sky (sky)
Hiding behind those white clouds
You probably became a star
I close my eyes, feel your breath and dream about you
Smile spreads on my face
I’m breathing with you right now
Time, please stop
Don’t separate us
Wind, please stop
My last letter that I send to you
I will never sing again because I hate this love song
So I won’t think about you and move on
I will smile while singing because I hate this love song
I am ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I am ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

I hate this love song

Why I like these lyrics:

What we can conclude from the lyrics is that Big Bang is singing about their deceased lover, unable to forget her. They feel the world has no meaning without her and want to  go where she is, which is somewhere in heaven among the stars. It's a sad song that is full of longing and sorrow.
I like that "Love Song" doesn't have one of those dramatic introductory lines that GD loves to add to ballads (like in Haru Haru or Lies). Big Bang's Korean lyrics are always quite well-written and I have no beef with them, but sometimes their English lines don't really match with the Korean ones. Mainly because in English some of those things sound too corny due to the differences in meaning between the two languages. Anyways, in "Love Song" I think the English fits quite well and doesn't change the meaning of the song. Instead, the English lines empower and emphasize the Korean lines. Like the "hello" in Daesung's part, which might seem random at first, but actually means that they're calling out to her, kinda like "hello, where are you?"
But my favourite parts of the song are GD's and T.O.P.'s rap sequences, which kinda paint an image in your head when you're listening to them. They are also the lines that explain you the meaning the best, in a very subtle metaphorical way.

  1. Hmm, I just noticed that it doesn't have those English intro lines.. Good point. As much as I love Haru Haru, I always crack a smile at GD's "oh.. my 'hurt' say goodbye"

This song is beautiful though.. It slipped passed my radar when I first heard it, and now I think it's just lovely, and I also like the lyrics. :)

    1. I also crack a smile everytime I listen to that English beginning.

Yeah, "Love Song" is a beautiful song with a great music video, and I think it has one of the best lyrics out of Big Bang songs. Even though people usually say that "Haru Haru" has the best song lyrics, I find them a bit too dramatic for a song just about break-up. Though as a song, "Haru Haru" definitely tops "Love Song" and pretty much every other song from Big Bang.
