Melody of Lyrics: 10cm - Hold Me/Give Me A Hug

Friday, November 23, 2012

Sorry for the late post. I had to skip last week's Melody of Lyrics because of technical issues and today my internet connection has been real slow. So, I'm posting this quite late in the evening.
Anyways, this week's edition is 10cm's "Hold Me/Give Me A Hug", which was released on August 11, 2011. I love 10cm's easy-going musical style and all their songs I'm familiar with have sweet quirky lyrics with a very positive approach. And "Hold Me" is definitely a song with a very lovely message that leaves you all warm inside.

English translation of the lyrics:

On that rainy night
Underneath the same umbrella
You promised to give me something
Have you forgotten?

On hard and dizzy days
When I stumble, you promised to give me something
Have you forgotten?

Give me, give me, give it to me now
Give me, give me, just give it to me

Hug me hug me hug me
Please hug me
Hug me hug me hug me
Please hug me

From the start of work till it’s over
The boss that hates me
Kept saying bad things to me

Before I start to cry
I wanted to have a cup of coffee
But there’s no one to call

Give me, give me, give it to me now
Give me, give me, just give it to me

Hug me hug me hug me
Please hug me
Hug me hug me hug me
Please hug me

Till your back goes out
Till your collarbone breaks
Till your neck is sore
Till your entire body gets red

Ah come on, Ah come on, Ah come on, give it to me
Ah come on, Ah come on, Ah come on, give it to me
Ah come on, Ah come on, Ah come on, give it to me
Ah come on, ah come on

Why I like these lyrics:

The lyrics of "Hold Me" are about everyday struggles and how, after a lousy day at work, you may find yourself longing for some comfort - a hug. The lyrics are relatable and easy to sing along to.
The reason why I chose "Hold Me" is because it is just the song you need to hear after hard day, and we all have those crappy days every once in a while. So what else do you need than a hug to cheer you up. Just like the lyrics imply, a hug from a person who cares about you, can easily make your day a whole lot better.
One thing I also like is how 10cm uses repetition, slang and wordplay in their songs to keep the lyrics poignant and unforgettable. In "Hold Me" there is a cute wordplay in the last lines of the song (the following extract is from pop!gasa - kpop translation lyrics):

“Ah-nwa” (아놔) is a Korean slang for “ah come on” but it also sounds like “Ah-Na” (안아) which means “to hug” or “to embrace”. So 10cm has done a bit of a wordplay for the last stanza “아놔 달라니까요,” which can sound like “Please hug me” or “ah come on, give it [the hug] to me,” which in essence, pretty much means the same thing.
