Melody of Lyrics: Lee Moon Sae - Girl

Friday, October 05, 2012

Lee Moon Sae is a well-known Korean ballad artist, TV host and a radio DJ, who made his singer debut in 1983. He's contributed to several drama OST and done duets with younger generation singers such as IU. Many of his songs are considered classics and are still being covered by K-pop artists, for example Big Bang's cover of "Sunset Glow"

I came to love Lee Moon Sae's lovely ballad song "Girl" thanks to the drama The King 2 Hearts, where it was performed by Jo Jung Suk. The song immediately stuck with me and I hoped to hear it on the official drama OST. But that unfortunately didn't happen. Anyhow, I tracked the original version down on Youtube and upon seeing the English translation I fell even more love with the song.

English translation of the lyrics:

Please stay with me,
and never leave me.
I long for the far away place,
but I can't bring your rainbow.

As I sit by the window in twilight
and watch the clouds pass by,
I paint my longing memories
in the sky.

Mmm-When cold wind is blowing,
You’re crying with lonliness.
I’ll always be with you,
and never leave you.

As I sit by the window in twilight
and watch the clouds pass by,
I paint my longing memories
in the sky.

Mmm-When cold wind is blowing,
You’re crying with lonliness.
I’ll always be with you,
and never leave you.

Mmm-When cold wind is blowing,
You’re crying with lonliness.
I’ll always be with you,
and never leave you.

Why are these lyrics so great:

With "Girl" its not only the lyrics, but the way the song is written overall that made me fall in love with it. The song starts very delicately and slowly, but once it hits the chorus it gets really powerful and the vocals reach the high point. Thanks to that, the otherwise quite simple lyrics come out really emotional and beautiful.
But at the same time the lyrics somehow speak to me on their own also. They are dreamy, evoking memories, and melancholic. I imagine the perfect time to be listening to a song like this would be a warm summer night, when the sun has just set.
Talking about the sunset, I love the references to the sky and how it reflects ones feelings, like the cold wind bringing on loneliness. Or the sky can also serve as a reference to heaven and the death of a loved one, which is a probable cause of separation in the song. But that's my own personal opinion since I can't tell what was the inspiration behind "Girl". In any case, I nevertheless love the lyrics for their lingering beauty and the emotional message they carry within.

Do check out the Jo Jung Suk's version of the song in this scene from The King 2 Hearts:

    1. I also love Jo Jung Suk's version. Too bad they didn't release an official track, I would have liked to have a full song.
