Melody of Lyrics: Ai Otsuka - Planetarium (Hana Yori Dango OST)

Friday, October 12, 2012

First of all, I have actually talked about Ai Otsuka and her "Planetarium" before in my song review here in this post, highly praising it. My opinion of it hasn't changed since and even though I also discussed the lyrics in that post, I still feel the need to include it in this series. So sorry for repeating myself once more.

Anywhoo, Ai Otsuka's "Planetarium" was released on 21st September 2005. It gained fame through the Japanese drama Hana Yori Dango and it was also where I first heard the song. The lyrics are written by Ai Otsuka hereself.

English translation of the lyrics:

The moonlight evening shows it's face, and the voices of the children disappear
Somewhere far far off in the sky, you're probably out there
We snuck away into the end of the summer, and we found this park
Do remember what that constellation was?

Even if we can't be together, I want to follow my memories, and see the same happiness as you do
The fireworks burst in a flush, together with that scent

I want to go to where you are, I want to run off right now
You can't see anything in the pitch darkness, it's alright to be scared
The starry sky with countless amounts of stars is always going to be right here, even now
I won't cry, because a long time ago, I saw a beautiful sky with you

The sound of shoes echoing out on that road is still left in my ears
Staring at my large shadow, I wonder if you still think about me

Even though they shouldn't have changed at all, sad feelings swell in me
No matter what I feel, you're not here anymore

I want to go to your side, even if just for a little while
I love you most of all, it's stayed a strong feeling
I tried silently wishing on a shooting star
But I won't cry, the wish will go through, into the beautiful sky

Even if we can't be together, I want to follow my memories, and see the same happiness as you do
The fireworks burst in a flush, together with that scent

I want to go to where you are, clenching my small hands
I want to cry, it was such a beautiful sky
I tried silently wishing on a shooting star
But I won't cry, the wish will go through, into the beautiful sky...

Why I like these lyrics:

To sum up the meaning behind "Planetarium", here's an extract from my previously mentioned song review:
"The song lyrics describe how Ai longs to see someone who has already passed away, and then recalling all the happy memories of the past. Ai tries to wish upon a shooting star, hoping that this person will hear her, but by the end of the song she realizes that no matter how much she yearns to see that person her feelings won't reach to him far away in the sky. "
Everything about "Planetarium" is great, the music video, the melody, the vocals and Ai Otsuka herself, so the lyrics are no exception here. The lyrics are sad and lingering, and really make me feel the emotions the song carries. I especially love how Ai Otsuka performs the song live, because then I see how the whole audience is enchanted by it. And in some performances you can actually see people tearing up by the end. And I have to admit, the story behind the lyrics makes me wanna do the same.
